Nothing Gold
handbound book created at William and Mary
My family, composed of some of the strongest and most loving individuals I know, has always been a profound source of inspiration for me and is the center of my artistic exploration. This past year has tested us more than ever, underscored by my grandfather’s passing and our moving from our childhood home. Amidst all the challenges we have faced, nature has become a grounding force in my work and personal life. Practicing mindfulness while outdoors reminds me that the natural world is in constant flux. Everything in nature evolves, transitioning to a new stage in life. Nature, too, is resilient, mirroring my family’s own ability to adapt, showing strength even when circumstances are unpredictable.
I created a book that chronicles this intimate journey of change and transformation within my family. The photographs comprise portraits, landscapes, and other compositions in nature. I have chosen texts that I believe capture the essence of what I wish to convey with the book, including a poem by Robert Frost, the Bible verse I read at my grandfather’s funeral, and a letter from my grandmother. The title “Nothing Gold” comes from the line of Frost’s poem “Nothing gold can stay,” symbolizing how the most beautiful parts of life are temporary, so we must cherish them while they are here. The use of gold thread and endpapers throughout the book is my attempt to immortalize my grandfather’s legacy further. Through the making of this book, I have gained a clearer understanding of my emotions and thoughts surrounding the changes in our lives. As I reflect on this journey, my hope is to share the strength of my family’s bond, highlighting how we remain united through it all and continue to grow stronger together.
